Measurement

A master cabinetmaker said that measurement is overrated. A quick look around his shop revealed tens of thousands of dollars worth of high-end measuring equipment. So what is one to believe? That he has those tools for decoration? Only a master would say that measurement is overrated.

You need a conceptual understanding of measurement and precision in order to measure. Developing this understanding leads to better-execution and higher quality work. If you hope a measurement is accurate more than likely it won’t be, so you either need to know that it is accurate by some means or other or you need to confirm that it is accurate.

Quality in measurement has a lot to do with expectations. Is a straight edge really straight? Is 90 degrees actually 90 degrees? Does it matter? Is it overrated? It’s not.

Conceptualize and then execute. Understand the concept better through practice and execute again. And again. And again. And eventually, take for granted what has become habituated and cavalierly disdain the fundamentals.
