Entertainment centers used to be wall units. With technological change, they have become low consoles. I think I prefer the console.
I do not believe that a TV should be placed up high. I think you should look straight at it. I was looking at this piece by Niels Bach, however, the upper central compartment is not sufficiently tall for the Sonus Faber center channel. So I would have to make my own. But what form should it take? Of course it should be as low as possible. I determined that for my needs, this would be 22″, however, I think this height is reasonable for most folks. How deep? I chose 19.5″ somewhat arbitrarily as it is within the typical depth range for this type of furniture. The width was the great question. I looked to this piece designed by Hans J. Wegner and based on the width of that piece, chose 78″. I believe that when in doubt on a question of proportion one can do worse than to look to Hans Wegner for example. Also the living room is rather large and a piece of that size would not look ungainly. I placed the piece on a 4″ plinth.
